I joined the American Atheists team just a few months ago and have the distinct honor of being the only staff member that currently lives west of the Mississippi.
I love the Midwest, and I’ve been happy to work remotely since before the pandemic. At the same time, it can be lonely out here! Growing up secular in a rural, religious area wasn’t easy, and finding community has been a challenge for me ever since.
That’s why I am tremendously excited for our 2024 National Convention. I can’t wait to be among the hundreds of fellow atheists and nonreligious folks that will gather in Philadelphia March 28-31.
History buffs will recognize how fitting it is for us to meet there: Although it was intended to be a “Holy Experiment,” the state of Pennsylvania has arguably been a model for secularism, religious liberty, and the separation of religion from government since its founding in 1681.
This will be my first time attending an American Atheists convention. And although I’ve heard quite a few stories about previous years, I suspect 2024 is going to be one for the books.
There’s a lot to do and discuss this year, including rolling out our organization’s five-year strategic plan. As always, we have an outstanding lineup of activists, community leaders, politicians, academics, and more. And there will be a variety of presentations, workshops, exhibits, entertainment, and all kinds of opportunities to socialize.
It’s that community aspect – the chance to meet like-minded people and make some memories together – that I am most looking forward to. Plus, we’ll be in the heart of a city teeming with history, culture, and, I hear, cheesesteaks. If this all excites you, too, I really hope you will register today to join us!
See you in Philly,
