Dear Friend,
Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that a Colorado law banning licensed counselors from engaging in the dangerous, discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy” with minors may be unconstitutional.
This decision puts at risk similar laws in almost 23 other states and Washington, D.C. — laws that American Atheists has long supported and advocated for.
Right now, our state policy team is working with our partners to ensure that no child — no matter what the Supreme Court said about Colorado’s law — is subjected to this pseudoscientific practice that claims to be able to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, and that survivors can pursue accountability.

This is just the latest attack on LGBTQ people, children, and church-state separation. Right now, our team is tracking almost 1,800 bills at the state level, including ones that would:
- Ban trans people from using any public restrooms, even in private businesses (New Hampshire)
- Allow public school teachers to preach at their students (Oklahoma)
- Permit members of so-called healthcare sharing ministries to deduct expenses from their state taxes (Kansas)
These bills are nothing new. And we’ve already succeeded in stopping some of the worst of the worst thanks to our testimony and our action alerts targeting state lawmakers.
Since January, our team has been working every single day to prevent these laws from going into effect in the first place — and to pass positive legislation that protects the rights of all Americans.
Your support means that positive legislation like our Student Secular Bill of Rights can be introduced in even more states. That our staff can host trainings with grassroots volunteers in priority states. And that our Secular Advocacy Teams can get to the state capitol to meet with lawmakers about the issues that matter most.
So let’s do it.
