Dear Friend,
I bet you’ve been there: Thanksgiving is over, you’ve eaten enough sweet potato casserole to last a lifetime. Maybe you’ll check out the Black Friday deals, or maybe you’ll stay on the couch. Small Business Saturday sounds good; you make a point of supporting local businesses. Perhaps that one piece of tech you’ve been eyeing will finally be on sale for Cyber Monday!
And then it hits you. Giving Tuesday. You should have seen it coming, since your favorite charities start earlier and earlier each year, trying to beat each other to what’s left of your holiday budget. You want to support them all, of course, but you also just want them to stop emailing you. Several requests a day, each more urgent than the last, with donations being matched twice and three times and TEN times, if you only give TODAY!
We don’t think this is the kind of fundraising that builds long-term relationships. We don’t want to pressure anyone into supporting our work under these conditions.
Instead, we ask you to consider what the civil rights of nonbelievers are worth to you at any point in the year, and then act with purpose when you are ready. That could be today, or the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, or not for another six months. It’s your commitment to the cause, and it’s your decision when you make it.
So on Giving Tuesday, you won’t hear from us. Rather than sending a hectic series of emails and invading your social media feeds every hour, we’ll continue working — strategizing, advocating, and building community — on behalf of atheists, humanists, and all freethinkers. Because that’s what you expect from us, on Giving Tuesday and always.
