Mark Oppenheimer writes the biweekly Beliefs column for The New York Times. He also writes for The New York Times Magazine, The Nation, The Forward, Tablet, and Mother Jones. He is the author of three books, including Knocking on Heaven’s Door: American Religion in the Age of Counterculture and Thirteen and a Day: The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Across America. At Yale, he teaches in the English and Political Science departments as well as at the Divinity School, and he directs the Yale Journalism Initiative. He is the recipient of the Koret Young Writer on Jewish Themes award and the Hiett Prize in the Humanities.
