Dear Friend,

The holiday season can be a difficult time for many. It’s all too common for members of our secular community to face alienation, estrangement, or other difficulties with their families. When we conducted the largest scientific survey of secular Americans, we found nearly one in three of us mostly or always conceal our nonreligious identity from family members. Those who do tell their families may be rejected or otherwise unsupported, which can have serious consequences on mental and emotional wellbeing.

So, our team at American Atheists truly appreciates the need for chosen families and the value of building community. We’re proud to partner with Recovering From Religion, the Secular Student Alliance, and other groups across the country who provide support and resources year-round.

To address this need, in the new year, we’re investing even more resources into state and local community groups, including the 200+ affiliates we already have nationwide as well as helping new groups get up and running. We’ll be offering training workshops and other materials to help facilitate more regional events in addition to our national convention.

Speaking of, will you be joining us in Minneapolis April 17-20? We’re putting together a great line-up of speakers, workshops, and other activities. You can reserve a room at the City Center Marriott for a special discounted rate of $139 plus tax per night.

Whether it’ll be your first AACon or you’re a regular, I really hope you’ll join us. One of the highlights of our conventions is the Two Hands Working service project. On Easter Sunday, while thousands of hands are clasped in prayer elsewhere, we atheists will pack thousands of meals for Minnesotans in need.

That sense of purpose and belonging is going to be especially critical in 2025. I hope you’ve enjoyed the holidays, however you’ve chosen to celebrate or not. I hope you’ve spent time with the people you care about and who care about you. And if you haven’t, please know you’re not alone. Everybody is welcome here.

In solidarity,

Nick Fish
President
