Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) pose as medical facilities when they are, in fact, anti-abortion organizations that utilize bullying and misinformation to prevent pregnant people from accessing abortion care. There are thousands of these “fake clinics” across the United States, and many states provide millions of dollars to support them each year. Yet, few people understand their true nature. Preconceived tells the stories of Maleeha and Maria, two women who, while navigating unplanned pregnancies, inadvertently found themselves at CPCs discouraging them from abortions. The film is a window into these enigmatic centers. Shedding light on how many of these centers are a part of a movement striving to make abortion unthinkable and illegal, the documentary explores the complex role of deception, finances, faith, and privacy. Amid a shifting legal landscape, Preconceived underscores the significance of understanding the resources available to pregnant people.

Our Presenters
Dr. Grace Tillyard is an adjunct professor at the Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies at FIU. Tillyard is a feminist researcher, writer, educator and organizer whose expertise covers reproductive rights/justice in the United States. She has researched extensively and written about the anti-abortion and crisis-pregnancy movement in the state of Florida.
Laila Salaam is a young reproductive justice activist. As a recent graduate from the George Washington University, Laila has taken her passion for international affairs and reproductive justice out of the classroom and into a career focused on educating her generation on reproductive justice. Laila currently serves as the Lead Organizer at Reproaction where she is an advocate for self-managed abortion with pills, D.C. statehood, and expanded sexual health education. Laila is also pursuing her passion for reproductive justice through the Youth Organizing Fellowship with Americans United for Separation of Church and State and as a book club lead for HEART Women and Girls, empowering Muslims to have open and honest conversation about sexual health and relationships.
Devon Graham (she/her) is an assistant professor in biomedical sciences at an unnamed state university in Tallahassee. In her spare time, she is the leader of the local secular group, Humanists of Tallahassee (HOT), and an assistant state director for American Atheists, for which she spends a decent chunk of her vacation time at the Florida Capitol, fighting the attacks on state/church separation, abortion, and LGBTQ+ rights. For these efforts, she has won their Rising Star Award in 2020, the Atheist Activist of the Year in 2021, and their Secular Advocate of the Year in 2023.
