Inform your state representatives and expose this deceptive campaign. \nProject Blitz succeeds in silence\, but with your help\, we can drag it into the light. \nProject Blitz has established “prayer caucuses” in at least 33 state legislatures. DESCRIPTION:HOST: Dennis Horvitz \n\nTOPIC: Christian hate group\nSPEAKER: Tom Van Denburgh – American Atheists Communications Director \n\nIn February\, American Atheists #LicensePlateHate campaign exposed how Arizona had already funnelled over $1 million to the Christian hate group\, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)—all of this with zero transparency. \nIn fact\, until our campaign\, ADF was quietly accepting funding from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for sales of “In God We Trust” license plates. \nAll that ADOT told Arizonans was that “$17 of the fee goes to promote the national motto ‘In God We Trust’\, 1st amendment rights and the heritage of this state and nation”—nothing about discrimination against atheists\, LGBTQ Americans\, religious minorities\, women needing contraception\, or anyone else ADF disapproves of. \nBut then we came along\, launching our #LicensePlateHate billboard campaign all around Phoenix\, holding a press conference\, and engaging the Arizona government in a tweetstorm to spread awareness. \nFacing pressure from constituents\, the Arizona Department of Transportation released a statement on Twitter\, distancing itself from ADF: “These plates are authorized by state law\, not agency policy. ADOT implements ARS 28-2430\, requiring us to provide this plate and disburse the funds accordingly.” \nAnd guess what! Just recently\, ADOT made its specialty license plate program fully transparent by informing Arizonans where “In God We Trust” license plate fees are going: to the Christian-supremacist group Alliance Defending Freedom.\n\nA $10 charge for this event is used to help cover the cost of the venue.

Originally trained in physiology\, Diamond is known for drawing from a variety of fields\, including anthropology\, ecology\, geography and evolutionary biology. \nDiamond’s\, The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal\, examines human evolution and its relevance to the modern world\, incorporating evidence from anthropology\, evolutionary biology\, genetics\, ecology\, and linguistics. The book traces how humans evolved to be so different from other animals\, despite sharing over 98% of our DNA with our closest animal relatives\, the chimpanzees. DESCRIPTION:HOST: Jessica Bauch \n \n\nTOPIC:  What should be NYC Atheists position be on late-term abortions? \n\nBOSTON\, Massachusetts\, February 14\, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – As Democrats in Washington\, D.C. bristle at accusations they support elective late-term abortions or infanticide\, their counterparts in the Massachusetts legislature are proposing legislation opening the door to both in the state. \nThey have introduced in the state Senate the Remove Obstacles and Expand Abortion Access (ROE) Act\, which declares the “Commonwealth shall not interfere with a person’s personal decision and ability to prevent\, commence\, terminate\, or continue their own pregnancy.” It specifically allows abortion to protect women’s lives\, physical health\, or “mental health” defined as “all factors—physical\, emotional\, psychological\, familial\, and the person’s age—relevant to the well-being of the patient.” \nThat’s the same language used in Roe v. Wade’s companion ruling Doe v. Bolton\, which pro-lifers argue is vague enough to authorize an abortion for nearly any reason. Late-term abortions would also be allowed in cases of “lethal fetal abnormalities\, or where the fetus is incompatible with sustained life outside the uterus.” \nThe Washington Examiner notes that the bill would also repeal language requiring that abortionists “take all reasonable steps […] to preserve the life and health of the aborted child\,” as well as the state’s parental-consent requirement. \nPlanned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts vice president Tricia Wajda summarized the bill as “remov[ing] the onerous\, shaming\, and medically unnecessary restrictions that deny people care in Massachusetts\,” and claimed the “right to access safe and legal abortion” is “at the heart of who we are as a Commonwealth.” Others sharply disagreed. \nHeritage Foundation researcher Melanie Israel explained to the Examiner that fetal abnormalities “can be anything from something that is going to be a life-limiting condition to the fetus\, or based on how loosely these definitions are\, it can be something like Down syndrome\,” and warned the mental health language was so loose it could mean a “woman is feeling overwhelmed about what the postpartum process is going to be like.” \nThe bill is “horrifying\,” Israel said. “It’s New York and Virginia all over again.” \nThe ROE Act is part of a broader trend of states on both sides preparing for an assumed reversal of Roe v. Wade in the not-too-distant future. Several liberal states have pushed bills codifying state-level “rights” to abortion and repealing pre-Roe abortion restrictions\, while conservative states are pushing measures that would either take effect after Roe or seek to force the Supreme Court to review the 1973 ruling by banning abortion much earlier than viability. \nThe pro-abortion bill is expected to pass the legislature and be signed into law by liberal Republican Gov. Charlie Baker. Should religion be taught at all? And if so\, what religions? Even well-meaning atheists might feel that religion should be taught\, as long as all religions – and atheistic perspectives as well – are taught equally and fairly without bias. \nThat sounds laudable and enlightened in theory. However\, many plans that sound great in theory inevitably turn out to be disastrous when put into practice. Teaching religion in public schools is one such example. \nI have personal experience with this. While serving in the Peace Corps in South Africa\, I worked for their Department of Education. The South African Constitution requires that all religions be treated equally. In order to comply with the spirit of their Constitution\, the Department of Education has adopted a policy that all religions should be taught fairly and equally in the public schools. \nSounds great right? The trouble is that teachers\, particularly rural teachers\, do not know all religions and do not care to know all religions – let alone teach them fairly. At the point where lofty policies touch the students. all that this accomplishes is to give teachers cover to preach and proselytize their own religious views in the classroom and to misrepresent and disparage all other religions – and atheism is demonized most of all. \nThe problem of state sanctioned religious instruction is not merely a matter of the recruiting and training and monitoring of teachers. False even-handedness spills over into teaching materials as well. Science texts typically enumerate a long list of native creation myths as legitimate. In at least one science text\, after describing the monkey myth\, and the milk myth\, and many others\, it concluded with what was almost an obligatory footnote that said “and some scientists believe that the world was created by natural means and human beings evolved.” \nThis sort of false balance\, not unlike giving equal deference to climate change deniers\, is an almost inevitable consequence of a misguided and ill-fated attempt to be fair and inclusive with regard to the teaching of religion. \nI came away from my experience in South Africa more convinced than ever that our American system of simply keeping religion out of our public schools is on balance the best\, most practical system of fairness. There is no shortage of alternate venues where people can preach and teach religion as much as they wish. Therefore\, there is no compelling need being met by including religion in public schools\, that warrants the certain risk of abuse and unintended consequences. \nAssiduously keeping religion out of our public schools is in fact the more fair\, the more enlightened\, and the more realistic policy position. \n————————————————————\nIF TIME PERMITS\nWe will discuss Betsy DeVos / U.S. Secretary of Education Agenda:\nVouchers i.e. public\, private\, religious\, schools….\nEducational institutions not monitored as to curriculum\, staff (qualifications…)\nMake it harder for defrauded / mislead students with false advertising and claims. We don’t accost people\, but simply make ourselves available to provide information and answer questions about what we do as an organization and about atheism in general. We are always well-received and a very nice time is had by all. The people who approach us are almost always quite friendly and sincerely interested. \nWe always need volunteers.
